Local Attractions

  • Welshpool & Llanfair light Railway (WLLR)- There are several options for these engaging journeys through the countryside.  We have tried and tested the Fish & Chip train, the Breakfast train and the full 2-hour Llanfair to Welshpool return trip and can thoroughly recommend them.  (We have yet to try the First-Class travel, Coffee & Cake trains or the Afternoon Tea Special but will keep you posted!).

  • Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture, Berriew - (9 mins) - If you like something out of the ordinary then Andrew Logan's work will not disappoint.  Visit the museum and then stop for lunch at Andrew and Michael's pub, the Lion Art Hotel where the walls are adorned with Andrew's work.

  • Powys Castle - (18 mins) - Enjoy the castle, the Clive Museum or the gardens and views.  Also a great place to visit for lunch - we can personally recommend the afternoon tea (you certainly won’t need an evening meal after that!).

  • Montgomery Castle - (18 mins) - If you're feeling energetic you can walk from the town up the hill to the castle ruins (alternatively, you can park at the top, I'm told).  Lots of history and a lovely town to visit with a few places to eat as well as the treasure trove that is Bunners, an old style hardware store where you can buy 'everything'!

  • Kerry Vale Vineyard - (20 mins) A local producer and vineyard.  Take a tour or stop for lunch with a selection of wines for tasting.

  • Gregynog Hall, Tregynon (23 mins) - A lovely place to take a stroll through formal gardens and woodland.  A great place to take a picnic and although we haven't tried it yet, there is a café there too.

  • Mach Loop - (approx. 40 mins) - (warning the website is very informative but has lots of adverts) watch the Royal Air Force aircraft fly through the valley below you – stunning views even if there’s no training that day!

  • Lake Vyrnwy - (approx. 40 mins) – A beautiful walk, tearoom and waterfall.

  • Shrewsbury – (approx. 45 mins) – Shops, restaurants, theatre, music venues, river, boat trips.

  • Ludlow - (1hr) - A picturesque market town with a Castle.

  • Barmouth - (1hour 10 mins) - Sandy beach, fish and chips, tea rooms, independent shops (including the fabulous Pieces for Places homewares store and amusements.

  • Aberdyfi - (1hr 15 mins) - Sandy beach, generally a bit quieter than Barmouth – lovely sausage and chips on the seafront.

  • Hay on Wye - (1hr 35 mins) - One of our favourite places!  Known as the 'Town of Books' and, of course, for the book festival, Hay on Wye has lots of book shops and vintage wares - a great place to visit off peak!

Food & Drink

  • The Red Lion Inn - Castle Caereinion - our friendly local, just a ten minute walk down the track.  A great place to go for a hearty meal with traditional puddings and good company.

  • Spice UK - Berriew Road, Welshpool - our favourite place to go for a curry.

  • The Royal Oak - Welshpool - we've tried the light bites and can recommend!  Good food and a friendly atmosphere.

  • Derwen Garden Centre - Guilsfield - They do a lovely brunch and whilst you are there you can peruse the plants and visit the farm shop.

  • Tanners - Welshpool - the independent wine merchant from Shrewsbury has an outlet in Welshpool.  We can thoroughly recommend their wines!

  • The Castle Kitchen - Montgomery - We haven't been there for a while but we've always had good food (assuming we can get a seat).

  • Lychgate Cottage Tea Room and Deli - Berriew - the first place we stopped for lunch when we moved here. Limited seating but fab food (and at least you can take it away if there are no seats and sit by the River Rhiw).

  • The Nags Head Inn - Welshpool - lovely food - we haven't had a chance to try it yet but apparently the Sunday lunch is amazing too.

  • Gillhams  - Oswestry - a Deli and restaurant with lovely food and great service.

  • Shrewsbury – Henry Tudor House - Wonderful food and service with great décor and ambience.

  • Shrewsbury – hidden at the back in the secret garden of Wyle Blue World (a homewares and accessories shop) is the Blue Bar - a beautiful place to enjoy a prosecco and a snack in the spring or summer.

  • Shrewsbury – Peaberry Grand Café - we can thoroughly recommend the Big Buddha or Prince of Persia flatbreads – we enjoyed them so much that we haven’t tried anything else yet!

  • Shrewsbury – The Armoury - we haven’t had a chance to try it but it has been recommended a few times.  Let us know what you think if you go!

  • Food Shops - Welshpool supermarkets (16 mins) - Aldi, Tesco and Morrisons,  Newtown ( 26 mins) has Lidl, Tesco, Aldi, Morrisons and Iceland.  Oswestry has a Sainsbury's superstore, Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons and Iceland.

Cycling

Castle Caereinion village is on the National Cycle route 81 from Aberystwyth to Wolverhampton. The Mid Wales (Lon Cambria) section of the route ‘crosses the heart of beautiful Mid Wales through the Cambrian mountains, tracing a picturesque 113-mile route from the coast at Aberystwyth to the historic border town of Shrewsbury’ (Sustrans online)

Bicycles can be stored in our workshop overnight *please note - we cannot take responsibility for your bicycle whilst stored on our premises.

Shopping

Whilst you probably didn't choose to visit Mid Wales for shopping, you might be surprised at the range of independent and vintage shops in the area.  We have listed a few just in case you fancy picking up something different on your travels.

Welshpool - There are some lovely independent shops on the high street, including The Little Welsh Bakery and Walnut Clothing.  If you venture down one of the alleyways on the opposite side of the street, you will come across some hidden gems, including, Linseed & Indigo - a vintage and interiors shop.  You will also discover another (tiny) vintage and interiors shop called Jane's Boutique, as well as some craft and antiques shops around Puzzle Square.

Shrewsbury – (approx. 45 mins) – with all the usual chain stores available should you need them; we love to visit the row of independent shops starting at the High Street and running into Wyle Cop (which as it happens pretty much terminates at Tanners, an independent wine merchants – who also happen to have a branch in Welshpool as mentioned above).   There's a wonderful indoor market at the bottom of Shoplatch (heading down towards the River from Pride Hill).  Parking at The Gap car park on Raven Meadows is nice and central for the shops (SY1 1PJ).
